What’s your favourite part about what you do and being an athlete? – I love the racing! It makes all of the summer workouts in the gym worth it when I have a fun and successful day of racing. I love that I can represent myself and my country doing what I love!
What’s the hardest part about being a top athlete? – I think the travel is the hardest. It’s hard to be away for so many weeks at a time from the comforts of home as well as family and friends. On the other hand, it’s great to experience so many different countries!
What are some of the challenges or things that the average person may not understand about the lifestyle? – People might not realize how little time is spent at home. I’m away so much of the year at ski camps and races that it’s hard to not get homesick sometimes!
Where do you train? (Switzerland? Canada? Both?) – While the majority of my training is done in Canada my team usually travels to Saas Fee, Switzerland in the fall for a few weeks. We usually also have one World Cup race in Switzerland each winter.
What are your favourite things about those countries? – I love to try the local food in restaurants when traveling. One of my favourite things to eat in Europe is pizza! It’s fun to explore the towns and cities we stay in and see the sights. Skiing in different places and experiencing new resorts is fun.
Tell us a little bit about your nutrition practices? – I try to eat a balanced diet and keep that in mind when making food or when I go out for meals.
Any guilty pleasures? (Cheese, chocolate, chips, vino, IPAs, all of the above?) – Chocolate, anything sweet, ice cream, macaroni and cheese, bacon. When I’m in Switzerland one of my favourite things to eat as a treat is cheese fondue!
At Switzerland Cheese, we are very proud that our various cheeses are non-GMO and made with the highest quality grass-fed dairy. Are these things to consider as an athlete when you’re planning meals? – When planning meals I try to select the most high-quality ingredients so it’s great to see that these options are out there.
Do nutritionists, doctors and the like encourage you to make Swiss Cheeses part of your diet? – When I used a nutritionist I was advised to eat everything in moderation.
What are some of your favourite cheeses and why? – I love aged cheddar cheese, Emmentaler, and Havarti. I like all of these cheeses because they are delicious—I think sharp, hard cheeses are my favourites.
People often think of dairy as “unhealthy” or fatty? What’s your take on this, how important is dairy in your life? – I usually have milk in my coffee, eat yogurt regularly with my cereal, enjoy ice cream, and like cheese in sandwiches or on its own. My mom also makes the most delicious macaroni and cheese! I like dairy!
You’re throwing a dinner party for your closest and dearest friends what do you serve and why? (you’re ideal meal/drinks plan) I would make some sort of pasta, a big caesar salad, and something chocolatey for dessert.
